Air France has announced the suspension of its routes to Mali and Burkina Faso until August 11, while flights to Niger are suspended “until further notice”.
Longer flight times are also expected on routes to sub-Saharan Africa, with increases of between 15 minutes and 2 hours.
This decision, reported by BFMTV, comes a day after the Conseil national pour la sauvegarde de la patrie (CNSP) closed Niger’s airspace.
The organization under whose banner the putschists have gathered claimed on Sunday evening to be in possession of information that a military operation was being prepared.
The junta indicated that a “foreign power” and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) were preparing to carry out an attack in Niger, and that pre-deployment was underway in two Central African countries.
The one-week deadline set by ECOWAS before a potential military intervention to free deposed president Mohamed Bazoum and put an end to the coup d’état expired on Sunday, while the head of state, elected in 2021, has still been held by the coup plotters since July 26.
