Mali: Adema-PASJ President Marimantia Diarra retires at 75

Mali in mourning. Pr Marimantia Diarra, President of the Alliance for Democracy in Mali, African Party for Solidarity and Justice (Adema-PASJ) and member of the National Transition Council (CNT), died early this Sunday, July 23, 2023 at the age of 75, following an illness in Bamako.

His death is a great loss for the Malian political class, and for the militants and supporters of the Bee Party in particular. Pr Marimantia Diarra was a senior civil servant who served the country in a number of senior positions, including Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, in charge of Planning from 2002 to 2004, before being confirmed as Mali’s Minister of Planning and Regional Development from May 2004 to September 2007.

Born in the Cercle de Diéma in 1948, Marimantia Diarra was an outstanding professor of higher education. Doctorate in geography and planning from the University of CAEN in France in 1985. From where he obtained his Diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées en Sciences et techniques régionales de l’environnement et de l’aménagement (DISTREA) from the same university in 1983.

He had previously obtained a Master’s degree in History and Geography from Mali’s École Normale Supérieure (ENSUP) in 1977, before flying to France. On the political front, Pr Marimantia Diarra was former secretary general of Adema-PASJ and former 3rd vice-president of the party before being elected head of Ruche in October 2021. In his professional life, the illustrious departed headed a number of national and international companies and organizations, including the General Manager of Mali’s Natural Resources Management Project (PGRN) from January 1993 to December 2002.

In addition, the former Chairman of Adema-PASJ was Vice-Chairman of the Comité national du crédit from 2002 to 2007, and an alternate member of the Conférence des ministres chargés des Finances de la zone Franc from October 2002 to September 2007. He was Alternate Governor for Mali for several international organizations from 2002 to 2007. Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banque Commerciale du Sahel (BCS-SA) since September 2 008.

On March 1, 2009, he was appointed representative of the President of the Republic and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Millennium Challenge Account-Mali (MCA-Mali). Pr Marimantia Diarra has worked as a consultant for national structures, non-governmental organizations and international institutions (FAO, World Bank, UNDP, UNSO, Swiss inter-cooperation, etc.).

The date and place of the funeral will be announced at a later date, according to a press release from the Adema-PASJ National Executive Bureau.
